Evidently it is a much vaguer term and harder to define. It has the same generality and lack of sharp outline of words like modernity, postmodernity, and so on. But I might add that when empiricists speak of experience, they are not using that word in a much more precise manner. My working hypothesis is therefore that today, in our philosophical and historicosocial actuality, we need to move beyond phenomenology toward an ontology of actuality. I speak of today not just with an eye on problems debated in philosophy, and indeed I claim to speak of the world in which all we philosophers also move and live.

15 BEYOND THE MYTH OF OBJECTIVE TRUTH Now, what Heidegger calls metaphysics is exactly the idea of Being as an order objectively given once and for all. It’s the same notion that Nietzsche considered blameworthy in Socrates, whom he regarded as the initiator of the modern decadence that put an end to the tragic greatness of spirit in antiquity. If Being is a structure given once and for all, neither any aperture in history nor any liberty is thinkable.
