At left center is Bellevue Cemetery, at Mountain Avenue and G Street. 50 Four The Founding of A rmstrong Nurseries Another settler from Canada to the Ontario model colony was John Samuel Armstrong, who arrived on March 3, 1889, with $6 in his pocket. After convalescing in San Antonio Canyon for a summer due to tuberculosis, he was well enough to start working at local nurseries.

Bloom of Corona was contracted to construct the building at a cost of $9,187. The city’s board of trustees wanted to use the library basement as a temporary city hall, so the cost of the building escalated. The library board asked Carnegie to donate additional funds, and he agreed to provide another $2,000. The building, while still not completely finished, was dedicated on April 12, 1907. Unfortunately, it was later deemed unsafe in the event of an earthquake and was demolished in 1959. 34 Kezzie Monroe (right) served as librarian from 1899 until 1928.
