Private correspondence traveled faster than official dispatches, and Bugeaud himself published reports before forwarding them to Paris. Metropolitan awareness of controversial events was often sparked by articles in the Algerian press or letters sent to legislators by friends and acquaintances within the Armée d’Afrique. 42 These efforts were stymied, however, by Bugeaud’s manipulation of the press, by the ministry’s inability to control newspapers’ correspondents, and by metropolitan juries’ refusal to convict editors for criticizing the war.
The impossibility of concealing the extremes of colonial warfare became dramatically evident in the summer of 1845, when the French public learned that an expeditionary column had killed nearly 800 members of the Ouled (tribe) Riah in the Dahra mountains west of Algiers.
