In high-density culture situations, such as silos, raceways, and closed recirculating systems, ammonia can increase to toxic levels.

There is no practical way of lowering total alkalinity or total hardness when they are too high. They can be reduced by water exchanges, but this is impractical in large systems. Hardness can be decreased with the use of water softeners when a small amount of water is required, however, this also is impractical on a large scale. Carbon Dioxide Free CO 2 can be removed from culture water by the addition of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OHh), commonly referred to as slaked or hydrated lime. 68 mg/L of hydrated lime will remove 1 mg/L of carbon dioxide (Boyd 1982).
