It is not clear whether this interpretation is merely a product of speculation on the part of the linguist or whether it is something which native speakers feel. The Chamorro dictionary entry referred to above, which mentions this decomposition of na'i, suggests that it is a fairly obvious decomposition, since the entries in the dictionary are not otherwise abstract in any particular way. 2. The exceptionality of GIVE words We have seen in the preceding sections how there are special facts about GIVE words in languages which may be seen to reflect the basic category status of the act of giving.
Preliminaries The act of giving has a relatively rich structure in so far as it involves (typically) three easily distinguishable entities: the GIVER, the RECIPIENT, and the THING being transferred. Admittedly, there are acts involving fewer obvious entities which nevertheless can be quite complex. Take the act of laughing, for example. There is no obvious interaction between people or things in the case of laughing and in English laugh functions as an intransitive verb and does not require a syntactic object.
This may help explain why the RECIPIENT seems to act like a typical object with respect to the passive construction (likewise the indirect object with "show"). In any case, GIVE is one of just a couple of three-place predicates in Maltese which behave in this way, showing once again the special place of the GIVE predicate in this language. 5. Exceptional verb morphology There are cases where the GIVE verb in a language is exceptional in its morphology when compared with other comparable predicates involving RECIPIENTS or recipient-like roles in its frame.
