But historical explanations, while not unconnected with what we normally mean by'(explanatory) theory', are not usually 'theoretical explanations'. To elucidate the last point, it is necessary to say a few words about the nature of historical explanation. How does historical explanation give us an improved understanding of how a segment of the world moved on from where it was at one time to where it came to be at another? In my view, it does so partly by confirming, explicitly or implicitly, what we already know, partly by challenging what we thought we knew, and partly by filling in the gaps in our knowledge which we wanted filled or did not know existed.
