In doing so he draws attention to neglected and essential aspects of Pater which are at work in modernist literature. A bit later in the opening chapter of Romantic Image, for example, he comments on how ‘to our great benefit, Pater in The Renaissance and Marius the Epicurean and James in “The Art of Fiction” and in his practice, insisted on the moral value of what is highly organised and profoundly apprehended, in life and in art’ (Kermode 1957: 11–12).
That is, when we trace these patterns and motifs we render explicit something that necessarily exists implicitly in Stephen’s psyche. 7 Compared to the extensive subconscious dynamics of his psyche revealed by these studies of structural patterns, the degree of selfawareness and conscious control of his psyche that Stephen can achieve is relatively small, though not trivial. While every structural pattern within Stephen’s psyche thus involves implicit elements, the pattern or rhythm that I wish to focus on here is very deeply implicit.
