Since the initial hypothesis is that these patterns of cyclical and incomplete modernization are more characteristic of Latin America than elsewhere, it can be falsified either by showing that their importance in the subcontinent is being overstated or that they are also prevalent in other regions.

From this comparative perspective, Latin America’s historic orientation toward external models is therefore quite distinctive.
