22 Another form of protest developed by the mothers' movement was the representation of the disappeared in empty silhouettes drawn on or pasted to the walls and sidewalks and streets of Buenos Aires. More than thirty thousand such silhouettes appeared: men, women, children of all ages, all life size, each bearing a name, age, and date of disappearance. Like the mothers' persistent presence in the Plaza de Mayo, the silhouettes insisted on the reality of the disappeared and on the need to remember their life.

The examination of women who have sought to make their voices and views heard and who have challenged traditional forms that limit and cripple them because they are women is not, in the Latin American context, a study of the rejection of gender roles. Some of the most powerful articulations of collective anger have arisen from the inability of women, in particular circumstances, to fulfill their sense of self as nurturers and caretakers. 2 Historically, many women in Latin America have well understood their social and political loci and have acted to change the circumstanceseconomic, political, culturalthat disempower them.
