Levinas and Lacan are very different writers, thinkers, and theorists. I find myself at different times and in different ways closer to one, and at other times and in other ways closer to the other. My training in religious studies has grounded me in Continental philosophical approaches, but my interest in psychoanalysis has a long history that has been equally supported and nurtured in my studies. At times my readings of one improperly affected my readings of the other. " I have attempted to use these two comments as railings on either end, representing extremes that I have tried to steer between, while occasionally bumping into them.
So, following Levinas's lead, I have treated his thought on a more abstract level, and in a decidedly less historical way. Lacan is a different story. Too often people dismiss Freud and Lacan for their insufficient attention to their own historical situation, to the historical nature of their own thought. This is solidly an unfair critique. 41 Additionally, we must remember that psychoanalysis is at its core a reading of how we live in the world, of our struggles with our past as it shapes our present and future.
Instead, its existing is master, as in its solitude the existent is inescapably "occupied with itself (TA 36/TO 55). Because the existent is its existing and nothing more, and because all existing is of the existent, the existent is made heavy with itself. In this Levinas argues that "a free being is already no longer free, because it is responsible for itself (TA 36/TO 55). This is the tragedy of a paradoxical freedom—the solitude of the self leaves us no place to turn but inward. Levinas now tries to show various attempts of the existent to overcome the tragedy of solitude through material life.
