38 Labour Relations in a Multinational Company While Falconbridge tolerated no labour unions at its Sudbury plants prior to the Second World War,39 the workers at the Kristiansand refinery had been unionized since 1911. Like all other foreign companies investing in Norway in the interwar period, Falconbridge had to accept that union power was a fact of industrial life. All workers, except some who opted out for religious reasons, were unionized. The shop stewards were mainly moderate Labour Party supporters.

He had personal friends and old colleagues (from BANC and KNR) among the management, engineers and foremen in both Sudbury and Kristiansand. He thereby contributed to the smooth integration of the geographically dispersed production plants.
